The Martingale, priced honestly
Double after every loss and you win one unit almost every time. Almost is the word that empties the bankroll.
The idea
Bet 1. Lose, bet 2. Lose, bet 4. Keep doubling until you win, then you are up one unit. With a 49% chance of winning each Banker bet, a single cycle almost always ends in a win. The catch is the size of the rare cycle that does not.

With a 63-unit bankroll you win a unit 62 times and lose 63 units once. The expected result per cycle is negative, and it is exactly the house edge times the total wagered, the same as flat betting the same money. Table limits make it worse: a $25 minimum with a $5,000 maximum allows seven doubles, and a losing run of eight happens about once every 250 cycles regardless of your bankroll.

What progressions actually do
No progression changes the expected value of a sequence of independent bets. Negative progressions (Martingale, Labouchere, D'Alembert) trade many small wins for occasional catastrophic losses. Positive progressions (Paroli, 1-3-2-6) trade many small losses for occasional large wins. Only the shape of the variance changes. The number that matters is the hit rate of the bets you place, and the size of the unit relative to that hit rate.

It wins small amounts often and loses the whole bankroll rarely. Its expected value is the house edge times total turnover, identical to flat betting.
How many losses in a row should I expect?
Eight straight losses on Banker occur about once every 250 sequences; ten in a row about once every 1,000.
